Coaching kids presents group activity opportunties that determine what kind of men boys will become, and what kind of world both genders will create together
When coaching kids, many coaches agree that it’s about building character as well as building athletes and winning games.

A hidden enemy not yet defeated
But when kids’ coaching comes to boys, for a long time there’s been something missing. Sports for males, especially professional sports, has always been intertwined with a subtle or not so subtle degradation, disrespect, and sometimes even near hatred of females. This has been noted by male and female experts for years. In fact, it seems to have become big business at the adult level. But it starts in childhood, at the level of coaching kids. That one in a million coach
Sports, like many group activities where boys are separate from girls, are often coached by men. So a non-profit called
The Founding Fathers
has begun to help men involved in coaching kids (co-ed or boys only), on how male coaches can be influential forces in their lives, and make a huge difference concerning violence and disrespect towards girls and women.Any coach who chooses can be the one who made the difference
They offer the “Coaching Boys into Men Playbook” for athletic coaches in schools and communities on how they can extend sportsmanship on and off the field to the particular problem in male athletics on respecting girls and women. A partnership of coaches created the Playbook including M.L. Carr – legendary athlete and coach, and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Because of coaching girls’ softball, I wrote
"Girls Love Softball"
for beginning female athletes ages 8 to 12 partially to help encourage girls to come out of their shells in a world where weekend TV depicted male athletes always interspersed with sex object females on the sidelines. Helping girls focus on their bodies as athletic has made a world of difference for many girls – and has helped influence male respect as well.
Thanks to the Founding Fathers, there’s a great resource for men who coach boys that was never available before, and a brotherhood to encourage them. The “Coaching Boys into Men Playbook” can be used directly by coaches, and can be suggested to school and community athletic organizations. It describes group activities and teachable moments to help good coaches become exceptional coaches.
A coach touches eternity and the future of society Ultimately, boys and girls are on the same side, facing the same horizon, and both want to grow up in a better world. They can do this best when they're no longer enemies. Coaching kids can be more meaningful than ever.
